This summer 2020, four police officers from North Rhine-Westphalia will be the only German police officers allowed to serve with the national police force in Spain as part of the federal "European Commissariats" program. Previously, only German police officers were seconded to Spain to support the "Guardia Civil". This year, the program was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Police Commissioner Maren Baier from Cologne and Police Superintendent Mike Geldermann from Gelsenkirchen are carrying out the extraordinary service in the former epicenter of "Malle", Playa de Palma. From August 1 to 22, 2020, the two will be the first two police officers to assist German tourists on Mallorca. Maren Baier and Mike Geldermann were chosen after passing the selection process and because of their good knowledge of Spanish. They assist German-speaking tourists as language mediators or as victim support officers. On site, they act as a link between tourists and the Spanish police, providing the necessary support for both sides. For the following three weeks, they will be replaced by police superintendent Carla Da Silva Catorze from Dortmund and police superintendent Markus Irom from Bielefeld, who will then be available to the tourists as contact persons and language mediators.
