Thomas Hendele was re-elected to his position as District Administrator by direct vote of the citizens of the district of Mettmann on 13.09.2020 and elected for a term of five years. He has held this office in the 5th electoral term since 1999.
The district administrator performs the following duties:
- Head of the district administration,
- First representative of the district,
- Chairman of the district council and the district committee and
- Head of the district police authority(KPB).
In North Rhine-Westphalia, the state uses the municipal district councils to manage a total of 29 district police authorities as part of the so-called "organ loan". The police headquarters in the independent cities, on the other hand, are not managed by the mayors, but by police chiefs appointed by the state.
As a district administrator directly elected by the citizens of the district, Thomas Hendele therefore has a dual function as the head of the Mettmann district police authority and the Mettmann district administration.
In addition to many functions in committees, associations and institutions, District Administrator Thomas Hendele is the President of the Landkreistag NRW, the association representing the interests of the districts of North Rhine-Westphalia.
He is responsible for around 1,300 employees of the district administration as well as around 800 police officers and pay scale employees of the Mettmann police station.
